Rituals for Earthly Survival: Celebrating National Tree Week in Portsmouth

This November, as we prepare to celebrate National Tree Week, we are thrilled to announce that Rituals for Earthly Survival will be joining the UK’s largest annual tree celebration with an immersive, nature-inspired experience. Created by the artist collective one000plateaus, our project aims to deepen our connection with nature, highlight the role of trees in sustaining life, and inspire pro-environmental behavior through art, action, and community involvement.

An Immersive Experience Rooted in Conservation

Rituals for Earthly Survival is not your typical tree-planting event. It is an immersive audiovisual experience that takes you on a journey into an enchanted forest, where light, sound, and movement come together to celebrate the beauty, wisdom, and resilience of trees. Guided by a visionary team of local artists—including Dr Lighthouse, Yumino Seki, Rusty Sheriff, and Kim Balouch—this unique experience invites you to meet the “Children of the Compost,” guardians of the forest who will guide you on a journey of reflection, wonder, and reconnection with the natural world.

As part of National Tree Week, Rituals for Earthly Survival brings together art, ecology, and community in a powerful celebration of our environment. Taking place from November 21st to 23rd at Treadgolds in Portsmouth, the event offers audiences an opportunity to experience nature in a new way, reflect on their connection to the earth, and engage directly with conservation efforts.

Tree Planting and Volunteering Opportunities

In addition to the immersive experience, Rituals for Earthly Survival will feature tree planting and volunteering opportunities in the community garden. These activities will take place during the experience, providing a chance for participants to take direct action to help green their local environment and contribute to a more sustainable future. It’s a meaningful way to engage with National Tree Week’s spirit of action while celebrating our shared connection with nature.

National Tree Week and the Tree Council

National Tree Week, organized by the Tree Council, marks the start of the winter tree-planting season. It brings together individuals, conservation groups, and communities across the UK to plant thousands of trees and hedgerows, celebrating the vital role trees play in sustaining life on Earth. The Tree Council, established in 1974, is a charity committed to promoting the planting and conservation of trees, and their work includes organizing National Tree Week, supporting Tree Warden networks, and providing resources to inspire communities to take action.

Portsmouth is home to the Portsmouth and Southsea Tree Wardens, a network of local volunteers supported by the Tree Council and Portsmouth City Council. This dedicated group is actively involved in various initiatives, including tree appreciation walks, guided tours, and collaborative planting projects. If you’re interested in getting involved with local tree conservation efforts, you can learn more about the Portsmouth and Southsea Tree Wardens on the Tree Council’s website: Portsmouth Tree Wardens.
